The AurelianCh. 1: The Aurelian
Chapter 1

The Aurelian

The void of Sector 7 was a canvas of absolute black, punctuated only by the dying embers of distant suns. Captain Elara Vance sat in the command chair of the Aurelian, her fingers hovering over the glowing haptic interface. The ship was a masterpiece of sleek obsidian plating and silent ion engines. It drifted through the silence like a ghost seeking a forgotten grave.

Around her, the bridge hummed with the rhythmic pulse of the life-support systems. "Status report, Kaelen," Elara said, her voice cutting through the artificial stillness. The ship's AI flickered to life on the primary monitor, manifesting as a swirl of blue geometric patterns. "All systems are operational, Captain, though the fuel cells are at thirty percent," the AI responded. Elara sighed, knowing that thirty percent was a death sentence in this corner of the galaxy.

They were light-years from the nearest refueling station and even further from any friendly outpost. The Aurelian had been running for three weeks, ever since the breach at the Tannhauser Gate. Behind them, the shadow of the Swarm remained a constant, invisible threat. The Swarm didn't use ships; they were a biological tide that consumed matter and energy alike. Elara looked at the star map, searching for a miracle in the data.

"There is a rogue planetoid three parsecs away," Kaelen noted, highlighting a faint speck on the display. It wasn't on any official charts, which meant it was either a sensor ghost or a secret. "Scan it for high-density isotopes," Elara commanded. The ship tilted on its axis, rotating with effortless grace toward the new coordinate.
