A gate archway dies as Kethe Wardens and Soll face off
Chapter 4

The Dead Gate

The vibration wakes me. Not the gentle hum of Nexus infrastructure — I've already gotten used to that, the way you get used to a refrigerator's drone or the subway rumbling beneath your apartment. This is different. A single, low-frequency pulse that travels through the floor, up through my spine, and settles behind my sternum like a second heartbeat.

Then it stops.

Soll is already awake. Already standing. Their filaments are lit up like a Christmas tree — every strand blazing white, their whole body rigid.

"What was that?" Diego sits up, blinking.

"A gate," Soll whispers. "A gate just died."

By the time we reach the Concourse, the news has spread. Beings pour through corridors and down ramps, all moving in the same direction — toward the inner gate rings. The mood is wrong. I've been on Nexus for less than a day but I've already learned the rhythm of the place: the Tumble is loud and chaotic, the mid-levels are residential and calm, the gate rings are purposeful and orderly.

Right now, everything is noise. Every voice at once. Fear sounds the same in every frequency.

Soll leads us through the crowd to Gate Ring 3. The inner rings are the major connections — high-traffic corridors linking the most established civilizations. Ring 3 is the Kethe's primary trade route. Was.

The gate is dark.

I don't mean dim. I don't mean flickering. I mean dark — the archway is just stone. No shimmer, no light, no sense of the contained energy that makes a living gate feel like standing next to a river. It's an empty doorframe leading nowhere.

Around it, chaos.
