The Argument in the Dark

We don't make it back to the surface before Lena finds us.

We're in the upper Underbelly — four hours into the climb back from the Root, exhausted, running on nothing but adrenaline and a physicist's conviction that the math is right. Soll is flagging; the deep stone dampened their filaments for so long that they need open air to properly recover. Diego is carrying most of our shared water supply and hasn't complained once, which is how I know he's worried.

Lena is waiting in the corridor outside the control room. Sitting on the floor, legs crossed, back against the wall. No tea this time. Just that particular stillness of someone who has been expecting you.

"You found the Root," she says.

I don't ask how she knows. She's been monitoring the Underbelly for decades. Of course she knows when someone enters the deeper levels.

"We found it," I say.

"And you think you can remove the control layer." Not a question.

"I can. A simultaneous pulse from the Root through every gate. Redirect resonance energy, strip the modifier parameters, restore the original base equations. The network reverts to its open design."

Lena stands. She's not tall — shorter than me — but the way she occupies space has a density to it. Thirty years of solitude and conviction compressed into a frame that has no room for doubt.

"It won't work," she says.

"My math—"

"Your math is fine. Maya, I'm not questioning your math. I built every monitoring system in this section of the Underbelly. I've been watching you work for weeks. Your resonance models are brilliant. Your understanding of the Architect formalism is extraordinary for someone who's been here less than a month."

She pauses. Lets the compliment land. Then:

"But you're missing something."

"What?"
