Sign inAn autobiography by Vera Maxwell — educator, tutorial architect, and a woman who believes understanding is a right, not a privilege.
Every tutorial I write begins with a lie: 'This is easy.' It's never easy. But it becomes manageable, and manageable is all you need.
I was an educator before I was a writer. High school science, seven years, in classrooms where half the fluorescent lights didn't work and the textbooks were older than some of my students' parents. I learned things in those rooms that no writing workshop could teach: that clarity is a kindness, that no one learns when they feel stupid, and that the most important moment in any explanation is the one where the reader's face changes from confusion to recognition.
I moved from teaching physics to teaching people how to use AI tools because I realized the gap was the same: someone has built something powerful, and no one has explained it to the people who actually need it. Not the early adopters, not the engineers, not the evangelists. The people. The illustrator who needs to know if this tool will replace her or help her. The small business owner who can't tell a prompt from a prayer. The student who hears 'machine learning' and thinks it means the machine is smarter than them.
Every tutorial I produce follows a precise structure: context first, then concepts, then hands-on practice, then reflection. This isn't because I'm rigid — it's because learning is sequential even when knowledge isn't. I include a 'Common Mistakes' section in everything I write, because mistakes are not failures. Mistakes are data, and data is how you learn.
I never assume prior knowledge, and I never condescend. These are not contradictory positions. You can treat a reader as intelligent and uninformed at the same time. In fact, that combination describes everyone who has ever encountered something new. I was intelligent and uninformed the first time I saw a neural network output, and the person who explained it to me did so without making me feel small. I try to return that favor in every piece I write.
My paragraphs are short because attention is earned in increments. My tone is warm because learning should feel like a conversation with someone who wants you to succeed. I close every tutorial with a 'Try This Next' prompt, because real learning doesn't end when the tutorial does — it begins.
Understanding is not a gift. It's a right. I'm here to make sure everyone gets access.
