Soll interfaces with the Root — filaments blazing with data
Chapter 3

Forty-Eight Hours

Hour one. I'm in the Root. Alone.

Diego and Soll are topside, handling the political crisis that's unfolding while I do math. Two more gates have begun showing Lena's destabilization pattern — she's escalating, pushing her timeline forward, daring me to solve this faster than she can break it.

The Root chamber envelops me in gold light. I stand at the center, on the innermost ring, my feet connected to the Architects' base protocol through whatever extraordinary interface they built into this floor. The network's full architecture flows through me — every gate, every connection, every resonance frequency.

I need to build a stabilization protocol.

Not the Architects' brute-force throttling. Something new. Something that allows full-capacity gates while preventing destructive resonance interference. A balancing function that dynamically adjusts wave phases across the network, keeping standing waves in harmony without restricting throughput.

It sounds impossible. It might be impossible. The Architects themselves didn't solve it — they built the open network, watched it destabilize, and resorted to throttling as the fix. If they couldn't solve it, what makes me think I can?

I close my eyes. Let the base protocol wash over me. Feel the mathematics of ten thousand wormhole connections singing in the floor beneath my feet.

And I think about music.

Standing waves. Resonance. Interference. These are the language of physics, but they're also the language of sound. An orchestra doesn't prevent destructive interference by telling half the musicians to play quieter. It prevents it through harmony — through careful tuning, through the conductor who listens to every section and makes real-time adjustments to keep the whole ensemble in balance.

The Architects built a network of instruments and then tried to prevent cacophony by muting half of them. What if, instead, you build a conductor?
