The Rewrite
Hour forty-two. We're ready. I think we're ready. I'm telling myself we're ready.
Diego is at the entrance to the Root, keeping watch. Brax is with him — the Kethe engineer came when Diego sent word through Soll's hastily-constructed communication relay. Brax brought three more engineers. He said, through the translator: "If the human physicist is going to rewrite the network, the least we can do is make sure she doesn't break it."
I'll take it.
Yneth is here too — their pressurized container hovering near the edge of the chamber, observing. Yneth hasn't spoken in hours. When I asked if they had any input, they said: "I have spent two thousand years observing. I will observe this as well."
Soll is at the center, standing exactly where I stood when I first felt the base protocol. Their filaments are dimmed, conserving energy for what's coming. They look young. They are young. And I'm about to ask them to become the conductor of a galaxy-spanning network.
"Soll."
They look at me.
"You don't have to do this," I say. "If there's any doubt—"
"There is doubt. There is always doubt. But my sister is breathing poison on a dying world because a machine decided she should wait. So I will do this."
Right.
The sequence is: strip, bridge, harmonize.
Step one: I send the reset pulse from the Root. Every gate flickers. The control layer — the throttling, the monitoring, the population management — drops for a fraction of a second.
Step two: In that fraction of a second, Soll activates the hidden communication channel. The Root's vibration network — dormant for millennia under the control layer's suppression — comes alive. Every gate connects to every other gate through the Architect substrate, with Soll as the central relay.
