The Way Back BurnsCh. 5: Threshold
The Weaving ceremony — hundreds of alien beings gathered together
Chapter 5

Threshold

Five days after the rewrite, the first Threadweaver conductor arrives through the migration gate.

Their name is Keth-Sol — Soll's aunt, a woman whose filaments burn copper-red and whose vibration range extends into frequencies that make Brax's monitoring equipment sing. She steps into the Root with the familiarity of someone who has always known this room existed, even though she's never been here before. She presses her palms to the floor, and the network's harmonization smooths another degree.

Three more conductors arrive that day. Nine the next. Within a week, a rotating team of Threadweaver conductors maintains the network's phase conjugation in continuous shifts, and the interference patterns have settled to near-zero.

The gates run at full capacity. Every gate. Every corridor. No throttle. No monitoring. No invisible hand sorting the traffic.

The Threadweaver migration rate triples overnight.

Soll takes me to the Tumble on the sixth day.

The market has changed. Not structurally — the stalls still cling to every surface, the beings still jostle and trade and argue in a dozen frequencies. But the energy is different. The gates are brighter. The atmosphere lighter. Species that haven't visited certain corridors in decades are flowing through, drawn by the suddenly unrestricted access.

A Kethe trader approaches me. Broad, granite-skinned, speaking through a translator that renders their words with the usual flat affect.

"YOU ARE THE HUMAN WHO FIXED THE GATES."

"I helped," I say. "A lot of people helped."

"MY TRADING PARTNER ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE DEAD GATE — RING 3 — THEY ARE ACCESSIBLE AGAIN. THE GATE REOPENED WHEN THE CONTROL LAYER WAS REMOVED."

I stop walking. "Gate Ring 3 reopened?"

"TWO CYCLES AGO. THREE DEAD GATES HAVE REOPENED. THE RESONANCE HAS RETURNED."
