Ilsa Marek was born in 2210 and became master of the generation ship GS Marek, third of the great March fleet's vessels, built at the Ceres yards between 2270 and 2288 from salvage steel freighted in over eighteen years of deliveries. She rejected four candidate crew billets in that span, and was right each time.
Appearances
Marek worked beside Andre — then a Belt salvage rigger — for years before she said aloud, in the spring of 2288, what she had understood since roughly 2277: that he did not age the way the rest of her crew did, and that he stood memorial bells "like a man attending his own." She raised it with him directly on the master's walk, eleven weeks before her ship's burn, and before departure gave him a formal commission, recorded verbatim: "Outlive us. Remember us. Meet our children." Her own parting gift was a blank book bound in salvage leather, its spine stamped WITNESS — the volume that gave his lifelong record-keeping its name.
The GS Marek departed the Ceres ring on September 19, 2288, at 04:40 yard time, watched by some two hundred thousand people. It carried 3,411 souls toward a star renamed Hearth at the moment of departure, and a book of the dead already inscribed with 11,204 names.
Significance
Ilsa Marek died aboard ship in 2361, at 151, years before news of Andre's public reveal could reach the Marek across the light-years it had already crossed. The ship reached Hearth on May 4, 3031 — 743 years after departure — and Andre met its landfall in person. Her name was the last called from the ship's own book of the dead, held to the end at her line's request.
