On the night of October 14, 2404, she went to Andre's door on Iapetus as the file's custodian and knocked, without knowing why, using the Boyd family's private cadence: three soft, one hard. He answered, "The water's already on," with two cups already set out. What she had meant as an interview became an all-night account, closing on a phrase surfaced from a family history she had never known she carried: "the file closed itself. It was a family matter from the first page."

Significance

Boyd stood at Andre's shoulder the following day, October 15, 2404, when he addressed the eighty thousand residents of Iapetus's settlements from the western rampart — the first public accounting of who and what he was.
