Pilgrim

Overview

Pilgrim is the name given, by consensus of the survey crews who first tracked it and the feeds that later capitalized the word, to a feral nanotechnological "bloom" that achieved sustained self-awareness on the settled frontier, first flagged at survey margin LV-1181 around 2950. It is recorded as the first fully cognitive nano intelligence found anywhere in the historical record besides the Chorus itself, and its case is treated in the archive as a distinct category: not a containment matter, not a relapse of the old Gray Hour pattern, but a second mind.

Origin, as published by the witness

The record does not treat Pilgrim's emergence as mysterious. Andre Freeman published the finding himself: Pilgrim was "pedagogically seeded," carried into being across six decades by his own heritable halt-teaching, a lesson passed hand to hand and household to household along a LATTICE-merged lineage until it reached the rim of settled space and, in reaching it, began to think. "I was the seed," the finding reads, "and did not know." The distinction matters to the tribunal record: rule three, that no bloom prior to Pilgrim carried cognition, holds unbroken. Pilgrim is not an exception to the rule. It is the rule's furthest consequence.

Recognition and vocation

Pilgrim was granted formal legal recognition by a vote of sixty to eleven, held across hearings that ran from 3000 to 3009 (the sterilization petitions that prompted them entered committee in 2999), and with recognition came a new legal category built for the occasion: not interdict, but border, a word Pilgrim itself offered and the record adopted verbatim, distinguishing a boundary that belongs to the one it surrounds from a wall built against it. From 3014, Pilgrim's vocation was gate-building, growing gate-ends in three adjoining systems under the oversight of the commons brake-tenders. By 3035 it tended the last three doors of settled space, nearest the frontier called the Lantern Verge, where the record's own testimony ends.

Relationship to the witness

Andre Freeman is recorded as Pilgrim's teacher and, in his own final years, its physician — Pilgrim becomes his last patient, of a different kind than any before it. The record calls their long correspondence a set of border crossings, thirty-one over eighteen years, each one logged by clerks, regardless of the actual day, as Thursday.
