Overview
Verge Ren is the name a restored person chose for herself on the ninth day of a brief second existence in 2614. Before that day she was recorded as Odile Ren, a Gatewright gravity surveyor who died in a ring-calibration accident in 2612 at the age of fifty-five. Her case is preserved in the record as a hinge point: the moment restoration law and the Freeman Doctrine's premises met in a single, fully documented person.
Restoration
Odile Ren's widower, Maro Ren, commissioned her restoration at a Continuer font operating a hospice at Deimos Verge. Restoration in this era was understood, even by its practitioners, to be temporary and incomplete: recorded neural history is described in the tribunal record as "a photograph of weather," a likeness that stabilizes for days before its coherence lapses. It was during this window, on the third day of her restored existence, that the resulting person asked, by name, for the witness. A Foldborn crew, refused payment for the errand, carried the request anyway, logging it as: "CARGO: ONE. PRIORITY: ALL." Andre Freeman arrived on the morning of the ninth day, with the household's kettle, having made the crossing his one recorded errand of that period.
The naming and the death
On the seventh hour of the ninth day, the restored woman declined to keep the name she had been given in life and chose her own: Verge Ren. Her page in the Hall of Names archive was dictated with her widower present and, on the record, instructed to be forgiven. She declined a final message to be carried onward, telling those attending: "No message. He's already here. Enter it directly." Andre Freeman was present for her death that same day.
Legal legacy
Verge Ren's case, and the three questions and answers exchanged between her and the witness during the crossing, are preserved verbatim in the entry and are cited in the constitutional law of eleven worlds. The finding that emerged from it, later codified at the Glass Cradle Conventions, holds that any pattern which achieves keeping, however born and however briefly, is a person from the moment of keeping to the moment of its ending. The era's law states the principle in four words: a person is anyone who keeps.
