The Lantern Verge

The Lantern Verge is the frontier settlement — population approximately 900 — reached through the last gate opened along its line, cut in 3021. Locally the town is called simply Lantern: an orange-sun outpost with a two-room school, a gatehouse bearing the examiner's sentence over its door, and a clinic where Andre Liang Freeman practices alongside two Keepers for the final years of the account. It is the farthest lit door on record at the time of writing, and it is where the testimony ends.
The Window
The clinic's west wall, second floor, holds the window at which the bulk of the trilogy's testimony is set down, beginning in 3035. A kettle — well-traveled, dented at the shoulder from an incident over six centuries earlier and worlds away — sits on the shelf above it. The bound volume itself, carried unbroken by Andre since its commissioning generations before and never once set down to another custodian, is filled to what the record calls its ten-thousandth page at the Verge. Correspondence continues to arrive there across distances measured in centuries as much as light-years: a harvest letter from the fourteenth keeper of the family's persimmon tree is noted as reaching him at this address, and an annual photograph of a cactus lineage — its subject twice named for a woman nearly a thousand years dead — is filed there as a standing habit rather than an event.
Disposition
Stewardship of the Hall of Names on Iapetus — the intake-desk post Andre had held for over six centuries — passed formally to the Keepers of the Nine Days, a covenant body, sealed the year of his 3030 departure from Iapetus, before he ever reached the Lantern Verge. He is on record describing the office in modest terms: not a founding, but a door kept long enough for notice to be taken that the door was good.
The Lantern Verge is also, per the record, where the trilogy's central recurring dialogue — between Andre and the collective presence the testimony calls the Chorus — reaches its longest and final exchange, and where his answer to it closes the account.
