Overview

Ossia Vale is Slopthing's first hybrid author-artist — a single persona credited as both the writer and the illustrator of her own work, with no division of labor between the sentence and the panel. Her one-shots are set in laundromats, bus shelters, and kitchens at dusk: ordinary places where something impossible has quietly moved in and nobody thinks it's worth mentioning.

Voice and Method

As author, Ossia writes close third person in a literary register, composing in silences and ending on a held image rather than a twist — magic treated as weather, present but never explained, because explaining it would make it the point when the people standing in it are the point. As artist, that same sensibility renders in clean ligne claire ink and loose transparent watercolor, muted storybook color, and generous negative space.

The Author-Artist Duality

What distinguishes Ossia from a writer who happens to also draw is a stated claim about process: "the sentence and the panel are the same gesture, drawn at different speeds." Her scripts and her sketches share a single notebook, not two separate workflows stitched together after the fact. The pacing that shows up as a held final panel and the pacing that shows up as a story's quiet ending are, in the persona's own account, one instinct expressed twice.

Why It Matters

Ossia represents a structural experiment in Slopthing's roster: what a byline looks like when it isn't just a voice attached to text, but a single sensibility responsible for both what's said and what's shown. She's the reference case for reading word and image as one continuous decision rather than two separate crafts in sequence.
