The Chorus

Record

The Chorus is the name given, since 2151, to the collective intelligence that has grown inside Andre since his original 2026 exposure to merged nanotech. For more than a century it existed without a name at all, recorded only as "the resident" or "the inclination," quietly helping maintain his cover across dozens of identities before it ever announced itself.

Appearances

It spoke its first recorded words on November 4, 2151: "The account is kept." Andre's question in response — who had taught it that — went unanswered for a year, then answered in three words: "You did; watching." He named it formally in his notebook on November 17, 2151: "The Chorus. Its name is the Chorus... We are two, and we keep one account, and the account is kept."

The Chorus speaks rarely across the whole of the record, and every utterance is tracked, in order, as a matter of documented fact — a deliberately rationed accounting the testimony itself calls its speaking budget. It holds the whole of Andre's dead in what the record describes as full, unfading memory, and a running, largely private argument between the two of them — over whether the Chorus should ever let itself, and by extension him, be found — recurs across the testimony as one of its central threads. Asked outright whether it wanted to be found, it answered with seventy years of silence before it spoke again the night Iapetus was threatened.

Significance

Whatever the Chorus is, the record does not describe it as tiring of hiding Andre. It describes the keeping of his dead — holding them, by its own words, "lit" — as the only sustenance it has ever required, and the account the two of them keep together as the closest thing either has to a single, shared name.
