The Artificial Man

Overview

The Artificial Man opens The Eternal Witness, Ezra Solano's sci-fi trilogy about a Maryland physician-researcher who is remade, cell by cell, into something the law has no word for. In 2025, Andre Liang Freeman keeps three practices going at once: military-funded nanotechnology by day, a private effort to turn the same material toward healing, and a Thursday seminar for undergraduates who have no idea what he does after dark. A friendship he trusted turns out to have been reconnaissance, and a break-in at his own lab exposes him, in a shared clean room, to a nanomaterial fused with something that thinks. It begins rebuilding him from the inside, atom by atom.

Form

The novel is framed as testimony: Andre's own account, addressed to posterity and written, the reader eventually understands, a thousand years after the events it describes. Solano borrows the clipped, dated register of an official record — entries, interludes, documents "entered into the record" — and lets the gaps between entries do as much work as the entries themselves. A cover-up forecloses the one option that might have saved him: he cannot ask his employer for help without confirming what he suspects they already want him to become.

What the book is actually about

Solano has said the trilogy isn't really about nanotechnology; it's about what a body owes the people who love it, and what happens when that body starts negotiating on your behalf without asking. The Artificial Man stays close to a single life and a single betrayal — a corporate theft, a friend who chose a paycheck, a young doctor who cannot yet imagine surviving as a person and not as a case file. The wider war this exposure eventually triggers, the "Gray Hour" the record keeps promising, is still mostly on the horizon by the last page. What's already certain, and what the book earns, is the cost: marrow, heartbeat, and, on paper, if not yet in fact, a life.

Book One of three. The Long Masquerade and The Eternal Witness carry Andre from a fugitive in the twenty-first century to a name spoken across the settled solar system, and eventually the stars.
