Kestrel (the Aviary)

Overview

Kestrel occupied a campus on Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg, Maryland, known to its staff as "the Aviary," a nickname the company's own lobby banner encouraged (TEN YEARS OF FLIGHT, traced falcon, hung the length of the entrance). Founded in 2015 by Renata Voss-Calder, then forty-one and already holding eleven patents from her years as a bench chemist, Kestrel is the site of record for the trilogy's founding event.

Layout and research

The Aviary held two sub-level research programs. Sub-Level One housed GRAYLINE, a nine-person structural nanotechnology team; Sub-Level Two housed LATTICE, a cognition-substrate program behind a gray stairwell door with a red badge light, a threshold one employee is recorded as having passed more than two thousand times without incident. The two levels shared a single feedstock transfer corridor. It was a failed coupling seal in that shared corridor, not either program's containment individually, that produced the merged nanotechnology exposure at the center of the record.

The night of September 4-5, 2026

A break-in at the Aviary campus on the night of September 4 into September 5, 2026, is the event from which the entire testimony dates. The intruders are described in the record without embellishment as "frightened men in a hurry, in the dark, for money," not villains in any dramatic sense. The exposure that followed, on September 8, 2026, is the founding fact of everything the record subsequently documents.

Later history

Kestrel was decommissioned as an operating campus within the witness's own recorded lifetime; a successor institution, and then that institution's own successor, redirected its funding toward orchestral acoustics, ultimately endowing a concert hall in Bethesda. The witness is recorded attending a dedication performance there under an assumed identity, honoring the memory of the campus's founder — who had died before the hall opened, and so never learned the name he attended under.
