Synopsis

The trials of Andre Freeman take eleven years and end by redefining personhood for every mind that comes after him: human, augmented, or synthetic. Freed but never again private, he becomes the thing Marek asked him to be. The Witness: archivist, mediator, and the only person every faction trusts, because he alone has buried friends in all of them. As the Gatewrights stretch their nano-seeded network across ten thousand light-years, the Foldborn scatter, and the Long March's slow arks finally make landfall among descendants who leapfrogged them by centuries, humanity augments itself gradually toward him, until the categories his trials fought over dissolve from underneath. The old sins return at scale: Replica programs try to manufacture new Andres and reap tragedies; the Verge Blooms, gate-seeders gone feral, force him to parley one last time with his own lineage, and he meets Pilgrim, a bloom that learned to speak, whom he chooses to teach rather than starve. In 3031 he keeps a 743-year-old promise, greeting Marek's arriving children by name. And in 3035, at the Lantern Verge, the farthest lit gate of settled space, the first and oldest artificial man sits down, at last, to remember on purpose: to write the testimony that is these three books, signing it with the name he was born under.
